Dogs in Critical Condition Get Special Care in India

Our partner IDA India takes in injured and ill dogs every day, but the intensive care unit and specialized staff at our Deonar Center in Mumbai are vital in saving the lives of dogs in critical condition who need extra treatment, time, space, and care.

The intensive care unit (ICU) is dedicated to dogs who have suffered from accidents, poisoning, neurological disorders, severe trauma, or who are in need of surgery, among other serious issues. Patients here have a dedicated team of veterinarians, specialists, and technicians who have been trained to work on critical cases.

Dogs may need IV fluids, oxygen, temperature and blood pressure checks, and medication, along with nutritional and pain management support.

There’s space for eight dogs in the ICU, but sometimes more are admitted if they need special care and can remain outside of a cage.

We are able to admit and treat around 20-25 dogs every month, which costs about $800. This covers blood tests, X-rays, medications, surgeries, two meals a day, or more for especially weak dogs, and our staff, who provide food, care, cleaning, and medical services.

Once they’re out of danger and well on the road to recovery, they get moved to regular wards. Any dogs who haven’t been spayed/neutered are, and those who can be returned to their areas are taken home. In some cases, like those involving elderly or blind dogs, they’ll stay with us at our center permanently.
