Running for their Lives: End Dog Racing in the U.S.!

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

For decades, greyhounds have been bred, tortured, and forced to run for their lives in dog races in the United States. Now, there's hope that the Greyhound Protection Act will finally ban this so-called sport across the nation, protecting both greyhounds and the other terrified animals who are used as bait to train them. Please urge your legislator to support this crucial legislation!

Greyhounds are innocent animals who are exploited and tortured to make profits for their greedy handlers at the racetrack. Due to their long legs and athletic bodies, greyhounds are naturally very quick runners. For this reason, thousands of greyhounds are bred against their wills every year to race, and bets are placed on racing in the U.S., as well as overseas.

When not on the track, despondent greyhounds are routinely confined to cages in warehouses, where they do not see the light of day until they are forced to race or train. They are also regularly denied fresh air, adequate veterinary care, positive human interaction, and sustenance, as all animals rightfully deserve.

When racing, the dogs often break their legs, backs, and necks and suffer head trauma, spinal cord injuries, cardiac arrest, and seizures. Greyhounds used for racing have also tested positive for drugs to improve their performance such as cocaine and oxycodone. While some poor performers and retirees may find their way to adopters, countless others aren't so lucky; when they are no longer profitable, they are killed.

Another monstrously cruel aspect of dog racing is the use of live animals as bait, commonly called “live lure training,” to trigger greyhounds' hunting instincts to get them to run around the track. Rabbits and other small animals are dangled, dragged on the ground, or let loose in front of the dogs to work them up into a frenzy until they catch and kill their target.

In Defense of Animals

Now is our chance to put an end to dog racing and live lure baiting once and for all. The Greyhound Protection Act of 2021 (H.R. 3335) will end commercial dog racing in the U.S., ban live-lure training, and ban gambling on dog races occurring overseas.
